Introducing Digital Literacy Lessons from Be Internet Awesome

Pear Deck Team

This time last summer, we were overjoyed to share the news that the Pear Deck team partnered with Google’s Be Internet Awesome to bring the free, digital citizenship curriculum, into ready-to-teach Pear Deck lessons. Over the past year we’ve been honored to see you bring these lessons to life, teaching your student to become safe, confident explorers online.
With online media consumption steadily increasing in and out of the classroom, The Be Internet Awesome team recognized the importance of teaching media literacy. With that ethos in mind, they’ve introduced 6 new lessons across the five fundamentals of the curriculum to help kids analyze and evaluate media online. You’ll also notice additional media literacy terms in two of the Be Internet Awesome Flashcard Factory lists!
We sat down with the leader of Google’s Be Internet Awesome program, Jessica Covarrubias, to learn more about why they added media literacy to its curriculum.
“The goal of Be Internet Awesome is to help students learn how to explore safely online. As we looked to update the curriculum, we listened to feedback from parents, educators, our trusted experts, and industry leaders. Much of the feedback we received centered on the need for resources to help identify credible vs. non-credible resources and other media centric challenges. That said, we worked closely with online safety and media literacy experts to craft new activities for the program. With the ever changing media landscape, it is critical that kids grow up understanding how to effectively access, evaluate, and create messages in a wide range of forms because after all, media literacy is essential to safety and citizenship in the digital age. We hope these new activities will help students become more savvy media creators and consumers.”
We’re excited to continue to be a part of Be Internet Awesome and to help bring these new lessons and activities to classrooms all over the world. You can check out the full curriculum on the Be Internet Awesome official website.
