Here’s what you need to know about West Virginia state testing, the WVGSA practice test, and how to best prepare your students for the General Summative Assessment.

What Is WVGSA?

The West Virginia General Summative Assessment (WVGSA) is an annual test for students in grades 3 through 8 that measures their learning against the West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards. Designed to measure academic performance on the state, district, school, and individual levels, the assessments provide insights that students, educators, and administrators can use to improve the educational experience. WVGSA tests also provide insight into the effectiveness of the statewide educational system.

WVGSA tests cover the following subjects and grades:

  • English language arts (grades 3–8)
  • Mathematics (grades 3–8)
  • Science (grades 5 and 8)

For high school students, West Virginia administers the SAT via SAT School Day in grade 11 as the accountability measure for math and ELA standards.

Students with significant cognitive disabilities take the West Virginia Alternate Summative Assessment, Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM). This assessment covers the same grades and subjects as the WVGSA tests and the SAT, and is based on the West Virginia Alternate Academic Achievement Standards for ELA, math, and science.

Along with the standard tests, students who are English learners take the English Language Proficiency Assessment for the 21st Century (ELPA 21). This assessment measures students’ mastery of the English language.

WVGSA and SAT exams are delivered digitally. The WVGSAW tests in mathematics and English language arts are computer-adaptive, so the tests become harder or easier based on a student’s answers to questions. ELA tests are composed of reading and writing sections, and WVGSA tests include technology-enhanced questions along with standard multiple choice.

How to Use WVGSA Practice Tests to Prep Your Students

The capabilities of virtual testing technology means WVGSA tests can take a deeper look at student achievement, going beyond basic multiple choice questions to assess students’ abilities to reason, analyze, and get from point A to point B in answering questions. To make sure your students are prepared for West Virginia testing, you’ll want to provide opportunities for them to take WVGSA practice tests in a digital environment that’s similar to what they’ll encounter on test day.

Along with giving students a sense of the content they’ll be tested on, virtual test practice enables them to master the testing technology. They’ll learn how to navigate from one WVGSA practice test question to another, interacting with the elements on the screen to drag-and-drop items, create graphs, fill tables, highlight text, and more.

For even greater benefits, have your students practice on the same device they’ll use for the real WVGSA test. That way, on test day, they’ll know exactly how the testing technology interacts with their screen, whether it’s on a tablet, laptop, or desktop computer.

Practice sessions with a WVGSA practice test will build digital skills — not to mention, confidence. When test time comes around, your students will know without a doubt that they can handle the test technology, which means they’ll be able to focus on answering the questions and demonstrating everything they’ve learned, thanks to their rock-star teacher.
