Why Shakespeare?

This lesson can serve as introduction or a review to Shakespeare’s use of language, specifically how iambic pentameter and poetic verse is used to reveal character traits and plot elements. The overall goal is for students to feel and experience the language. Go beyond defining iambic pentameter by having students hear the rhythms of Shakespeare’s verse. By both speaking and scanning iambic pentameter during this lesson, students should be more prepared to analyze Shakespeare when they are studying and performing his work.
